Over the past few months, our community has faced immense challenges ranging from one the longest federal government shutdowns in history to delays in funding for programs such as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) and other safety net programs. This, compounded by increased federal immigration presence, has left many in our community fearful and financially vulnerable.
The Board recognized the good faith efforts by utilities to put some protections in place as a result of the shutdown. However, given the serious nature of this moment and the need for community members to preserve access to critical energy utility service in the upcoming winter months, the Board asked regulators to go further and prohibit utility shut offs through April 2026. The Board also asked utilities to offer longer payment plans to community members who have fallen behind in their bills.
Multnomah County will continue prioritizing advocacy for stronger protections for those at risk of disconnection or disconnected. There are programs available to help families cope with rising utility bills and provide emergency bill assistance. Call 211 or visit the resource page to learn more. Read the letter here.
