Project Description

Safer Sandy is a planning project to make NE Sandy Blvd safer for everyone to use. Sandy Blvd is an important road because it connects shops, homes, and job centers in Gresham, Fairview and Wood Village. Right now, the road is missing some important features such as sidewalks, bike lanes and accessible bus stops.

The goal of the project is to identify improvements for everyone who walks, rolls, bikes, takes transit, or drives on Sandy so they can share the road safely. This will be an opportunity to consider options such as adding crosswalks, improving street lighting, reducing truck conflict points, new sidewalks and bike lanes as well as other ideas.

This project is done in partnership with the City of Fairview and made possible with support from Metro.

Proposed Improvements

This past spring, community members shared what matters most:

  • Safer roads for everyone
  • Concerns about speeding
  • Maintenance of pavement and fixing potholes
  • Safer and more accessible sidewalks and crossings
  • Better options for people walking, biking, and rolling
  • Comfortable and accessible transit stops
  • More street lighting

Read the summary of Safer Sandy community input from this spring.

Based on these community priorities, we have a couple of design choices to make. Here are the two main options:

Option A: Raised, separated bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides.

  • Complete sidewalks on both sides.
  • Raised, separated biking and rolling lanes on both sides of the street in both directions.
  • Allows for access on both sides of the street
  • More seamlessly connects to the existing bike lanes on both ends of the corridor.

Option B: Wider, asphalt walking and biking path on one side, with sidewalk and no bike lane on the other side.

  • Bike travel in both directions would happen on one side of the road.
  • Connects to existing and planned shared-use paths in Fairview and Gresham.
  • Fits better in narrow parts of the road.
  • Potentially more cost-effective.

These options each have tradeoffs in terms of space, cost, and how people move along the corridor.

Both options would have the following:

  • Continuous walking and biking facilities along the corridor
  • Separation for people walking and biking from traffic by curbs and vegetated buffer space.
  • Improved lighting
  • New and upgraded crosswalks
  • Bus stop improvements
  • Street trees and landscaping
  • Center left turn lane, intersection improvements

Tell us what you think about these two design options, along with other proposed improvements.

Timeline

This project started in early 2025 and will continue through 2025. During this time, we are reviewing existing conditions, engaging community members, and creating design ideas.

We want to make sure the Safer Sandy plan reflects your needs. For this project, we’ll move through three key engagement phases:

  • Phase 1, Summer 2025 (completed)
Get the word out and hear about your experience. Hear safety concerns and visions for the future of Sandy.
  • Phase 2, Fall 2025 (we are here)
    Propose and refine improvements.
  • Phase 3, Winter 2026
Review draft plan for final feedback.
