What is Black Business Month?

The observance was established in 2004 by historian John William Templeton and engineering entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan to empower minority business owners and address disparities in financial backing. August was chosen as it marks the birth month of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a pioneer of Black entrepreneurship. 

How To Play

To celebrate, Commissioner Singleton has created a Scavenger Hunt that features Black-owned businesses throughout Multnomah County. This special Black Business Month Scavenger Hunt will go for the entire month of August. 

• Each clue below correlates to a different Black business. We encourage the use of phones and friends to help solve clues! 
• Once you find/visit/purchase/ post about the business on Instagram, Facebook, or Bluesky and tag that business (if they are on that platform) AND Commissioner Singleton's office  
• Use the #SingletonScavengerHunt

Clues

1. Having more than just Tees, this woman owned Black Business will make sure you are fresh while wearing your truth.
2. Home of the Infamous Bowl, this vegan sinful southern eatery has that good lettuce.
3. This grand bookstore is owned by a Black Queer woman and will make you believe in love. Buying a book is a good gesture. 
4. Not to be confused with the other TLC, this coffee subscription company doesn't have any scrubs.
5. Do you need a florist? This Black woman owned business would like to inspire you. 
6. This bookstore has so many things to read you may have to open your third eye.
7. This family-owned late-night burger joint serving unapologetically good burgers. It should be a syndicate. 
8. They are on Mississippi, but in Portland. Their fish sells out but don't cut the line, just wrap up your day early.
9. Whatever path you are on this counseling business wants to be on that journey with you.
10. This Black business will make sure your house smells better than OK. Mister covers the essentials.
11. Cannabis got a green light from the state. This business is using a an old muse with an urban twist. 
12. When it comes to cleaning this business goes beyond surface level. They are Oregon's only certified Black-owned company offering professional graffiti removal.
13. This gallery gathers members of the Black immigrant diaspora to explore the gifts, tribulations, griefs, and celebrations.
14. This coffee shop will make you feel their love with a kiss. 
15. Euphoria awaits at this mobile spa who will elevate your life through holistic wellness. 
16. Where can you get NFL player and chef Donte Savage, to make you a meal? Cause he puts his heart and soul into everything.
17. If you want to relive old bars like the Cotton Club and Love Train, this NE pub is the obvious choice. But it is if you are outside on these streets. 
18. This business syrups makes you feel like a mixologist. It's as sweet as honey and the bees knees. 
19. This consulting business promises expert guidance for organizational growth. They were in the Pitch Black showcase 2025.
20. This business will help you develop your property and business. Based in NE PDX they will help you build. 
21. By empowering individuals through exceptional hair care, you may feel like Aphrodite. 
22. Having a hard time talking about race? This mother daughter duo know how to get folks talking. 
23. If you are going to a corner market, this Black business is the oldest on its street. 
24. Want a Black Queer woman who absolutely is a Killa in the kitchen who can cook for you? This business has got you covered. 
25. It is said that wellness starts with the self. This business wants to build you from the inside out. 
26. Be reasonable about your need for new apparel. Your loyalty should be to stay fly. 
27. Need some Jollof rice but you live in PDX? This west African restaurant (where you can dance) will do right by you. Just go to SE. 
28. Go here if you want a burger. Be warned, they are stupid big. They cater too!
29. This brotha is wholistic when it comes to wellness and consulting. He helps you heal with a trauma-informed approach.

35. Can't choose between a dessert martini or a scoop of ice cream? You don't this ice cream barlor will get you tipsy.

37. This business specializes in workplace culture change.
38. A good liquor will make you feel like royalty. This Black woman owned business knows how to raise your spirits.
39. No one would suspect an Italian restaurant in the Cully neighborhood was Black owned. 
40. This St. Johns dispensary will leave you sky high.
41. Deadstock refers to clothing or fashion, in this instance it's where you get great coffee.
42. PDX has a Uber or Lyft alternative. These cab drivers sport an iconic yellow colored fleet.
43. You don't have to feel downbeat to go to this Black owned bar in downtown Portland.
44. This downtown business cosmetics shop will make you feel like you're the main event.
45. The DB stands for Da Best, or at least that's a guess. Just grab a dessert. Their cupcakes are fire. 
46. When dance is life, this company has you covered.
47. This international DJ is a Portland-native. Her Afro-Latine beats give her that cool aloof vibe that makes you think of Daria.
48. This DJ is no Girl but a woman who has playlists that will have the neighbors next door stopping by.
49. This appeal is everyday wear for people in their grind. They will make sure you are always seen. 
50. If you want a full meal and you're next to to the market with Jack's chicken, try the Ethiopian food spot next door 
51. Want hair like a champion? This barbershop has their styles down to s science it should be an institute. 
52. This business name uses a word from the Akan and Twi languages of Ghana meaning to "go back to get it". They provide counseling centering the care of Black and African American children, youth, and families
53. Whether you business idea is bare bones and or it's an established business and need to go back to the basics, this coaching will help you out.
54. They are devoted to you. This real estate business will feel more like a collective.
55. This food cart is for those busy on their hustle. Come through and get a burger packed with flavor.
56. The City of Roses has its own Black-owned garbage and recycling collectors here at our disposal.
57. This soulful cafe will give you tasty drinks to sip on.
58. Some believe this caterer is aiming to be the best this side of the Miss'ipi. Let Chef Melinda get you taken care of.
