Clear skies and a picturesque sunset was the setting at the CROPS Farm in Troutdale as youth, volunteers and organizers for Multnomah County’s Hands of Wonder Garden program hosted their first Dinner Saturday, September 27th.
Dozens of people showed up for the “Farm to Table Dinner” including Commissioner Diane McKeel, Commissioner Judy Shiprack , Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Nan Waller and Juvenile Services Division Director Christina McMahan.
The dinner was intended to bring the community together to support young people making strides by learning life and work-skills necessary for future jobs while also completing community service. "It is exciting to see youth creating a new vision for themselves as they experience the satisfaction of their accomplishments in these programs, and powerful for citizens and families to witness these young people contributing to the community in positive way," said Christina McMahan.
Four young graduates received a round of applause while being awarded certificates for completing the 8 week-program. Many graduates also completed internships at popular local restaurants like Screen Door and Noble Rot Wine bar while also completing the program.
Saturday’s graduates helped grow and harvest many of the fruits and vegetables served for the dinner. Guests were served a variety of garden-grown dishes from sautéed kale with grilled onions, squash ratatouille, chicken garnished with herbs and chives and apple crisps harvested from Multnomah County’s Juvenile Services Division apple trees.
Those who attended were encouraged to make donations to help cover the costs of the event. Restorative Justice Coordinator Sidney Morgan explained that the event was the first of what will likely be many more to come.
