What is Black Business Month?
The observance was established in 2004 by historian John William Templeton and engineering entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan to empower minority business owners and address disparities in financial backing. August was chosen as it marks the birth month of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a pioneer of Black entrepreneurship.
How To Play
To celebrate, Commissioner Singleton has created a Scavenger Hunt that features Black-owned businesses throughout Multnomah County. This special Black Business Month Scavenger Hunt will go for the entire month of August.
- Each clue below correlates to a different Black business. We encourage the use of phones and friends to help solve clues!
- Once you find/visit/purchase/ post about the business on Instagram, Facebook, or Bluesky and tag that business (if they are on that platform) AND Commissioner Singleton's office
