I am running for the Troutdale City Council because I care about our community. I want to preserve the unique qualities of this town and strike a balance between development and livability. In that process I promise to always listen to your concerns and to take them into account every time we make a decision on the council.

We face many challenges at the present time. There are fiscal problems that must be solved as well as longer term issues like the redevelopment of the former sewage treatment site in downtown. We must also continue to take care of the parks and natural areas that make our city such a special place to live.

Please consider voting for me to be your voice on our city council.

PAT SMITH

OCCUPATION: Retired; Troutdale City Councilor; Night Auditor, Motel 6, Troutdale.

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Book-keeping/Management for 3 businesses owned in Troutdale; Volunteer, Mt. Hood Medical; Board of Directors/Treasurer, Troutdale Historical Society.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Public Schools; Graduated Hughes H.S., Cincinnati, Ohio.

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Troutdale City Council; Troutdale Budget Committee; Troutdale Parks Advisory Committee.

I have lived in Troutdale for over 30 years. My husband and I have been owners of three separate businesses in Troutdale. We raised our family of 4 children here, always staying involved in local activities.

I have been on the Troutdale City council for 8 years and I feel they have been very successful years. But now we are in a recession. We must look strongly at spending. We are in the highest tax area in the state and our property taxes are escalating. We can’t keep spending money we don’t have. It is hard now for the working people and seniors to keep up.

I was not for the urban renewal but I did favor letting the voter decide the issue. I stated at the time we were “opening a can of worms.” It took just two weeks to prove I was right!

I want to preserve what’s best about Troutdale, including its small town feel and our successful downtown. The idea of a new bridge to carry traffic over the tracks from the outlet stores into downtown would cost millions of dollars. The voters should not have to pay for something that would benefit only a few and ruin downtown with too much traffic and no place to park.

When it’s time to vote, please study what the candidates stand for. Some candidates want you to sign petitions and others want lots of roads, bridges, air travel, and to make Troutdale a hub for busses running in all directions. Is that really what we want?

My priorities are: (1) Maintain public safety; (2) Oppose greater housing density which Metro keeps trying to push on us; (3) Fight higher taxes.
