Violence is a leading cause of injury and death among young people. It is also linked to drug and alcohol use, and high-risk sexual activity.

This important public health issue has a ripple effect on communities, making it harder for everyone to go to school and work, get exercise and build a prosperous life.

The Community Capacitation Center is leading two efforts to reduce youth violence in our community.

Youth Violence Prevention Partnership

This partnership brings together youth and law enforcement officials at schools, agencies and faith communities to:

  • Build positive relationships
  • Learn more about laws that affect youth
  • Empower youth and law enforcement officials to identify and address issues that create inequities in youth violence.

Striving to Reduce Youth Violence Everywhere (STRYVE)

Multnomah County Health Department has been awarded a STRYVE grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to address youth violence in North and Northeast  Portland. The STRYVE initiative helps communities take a public health approach to preventing youth violence before it starts. It builds on the work we’re already doing to decrease youth violence.

Through this initiative, Portland joins the UNITY partnership of cities across the country that are working together to address youth violence. UNITY (Urban Networks to Increase Thriving Youth through Violence Prevention) will provide education and technical assistance as we promote a prevention approach to reducing violence affecting youth.

Get Involved

Join our STRYVE Coalition. We're currently forming a coalition to develop a comprehensive plan to stop youth violence before it starts. The application period is now closed. Applicants will be notified by September 28 and meetings will begin in October.

Volunteer with STRYVE locally to help raise awareness of prevention as an approach to reduce youth violence.
