Let’s Make a Plan to VOTE!: Multnomah County Elections can help!

Elections workers can provide assistance to voters.
This year’s Nov. 5 General Election includes local contests for Portland Mayor, Portland City Council, Portland Auditor, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, federal contests including the President of the United States and U.S. House of Representatives, and state contests including Oregon Secretary of State, State Treasurer, Attorney General, and state legislative seats. Voters will also decide on statewide and local ballot measures.

State and County voters’ pamphlets will be mailed to every household in Multnomah County on Oct. 9 - 11. Due to the large size of both the State and County voters’ pamphlets, they will be delivered separately instead of together. In past elections, the County’s voters’ pamphlet was included as part of the State voters’ pamphlet.

Ballots will be mailed to all registered Multnomah County voters beginning Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The voter registration deadline for this election is less than two weeks away, Tuesday, Oct. 15. Register to vote online at oregonvotes.gov/register.

If you need assistance to ensure you can cast your ballot, you can go online, call, email or visit a Multnomah County Elections location for help during any step of the voting process. That includes how to sign up to vote, how to mark or read a ballot, updating voter registration information, understanding election rules and steps in voting, and any other election-related help.

In advance of the Nov. 5 General Election, Multnomah County Elections reminds all voters: Let’s Make a Plan to VOTE!

This action-focused checklist walks through the five steps necessary to ensure your vote is counted:

  • ☑ Get your ballot.
  • ☑ VOTE your ballot.
  • ☑ Return your ballot.
  • ☑ Have a VOICE and make a difference!

Voter Assistance available for voters with disabilities.

As a voter with a disability, you can request help with voting from a friend, family member, or someone else you know.

If needed, you can also call and request voting and election-related help from Multnomah County Elections.

Elections’ Voter Assistance Teams can help a voter at home, at the facility they live in, or at one of Multnomah County Elections’ service locations in Southeast Portland or Gresham. This help is always free of charge.

Legally, employers or union representatives cannot provide voter assistance.

Voter assistance is available for voters who speak languages other than English.

As a voter you can also request assistance in your preferred language.

Multnomah County Elections has staff who speak many languages. The Elections Division also can provide an interpreter — free of charge — to anyone who needs help with voting or with elections processes in a language other than English. Telephone interpretation is available in any language.

Don’t wait: Voter registration deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Multnomah County Elections reminds voters that Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, is the voter registration deadline for the Nov. 5 General Election.

Oregon voters with a valid Oregon driver’s license or ID card can register online at www.oregonvotes.gov/register. If you do not have a valid or current Oregon license or ID card, you will need to fill out a paper Oregon Voter Registration Card.

Paper registration cards are available at the U.S. Post Office, Multnomah County Library locations, and the Multnomah County Duniway-Lovejoy Elections Building. The Gresham Voting Center Express will open starting Monday, Oct. 10, with Elections staff ready to help you register to vote and answer any questions you might have.

If you are already registered to vote we ask that you check that your address and name are up to date in your voter registration record. Voters can update their information online at www.oregonvotes.gov/myvote or with an Oregon Voter Registration Card.

Reminder: As ranked-choice voting arrives, this year’s ballot will look different for City of Portland voters

This general election Nov. 5, 2024, marks the first time voters in the City of Portland will use ranked-choice voting to select candidates in contests for Portland Mayor, Portland City Council and Portland Auditor. And that means ballots for those voters will look different this fall.

Ranked-choice voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference instead of choosing only one candidate. This method allows someone’s vote to count toward another candidate if their favorite candidate is eliminated. Portland voters will be able to rank up to six candidates.

Multnomah County Elections has released both a video and resources website explaining the basics of ranked-choice voting.

Absentee Ballot Information

Voters who will be away from home on or near Election Day should request an absentee ballot to be mailed to their temporary address. Absentee ballots are available 43 days before each election (Sept. 23 for the Nov. 5 General Election).

To receive an absentee ballot, you must complete an Absentee Ballot Request Application. You can find the application and more information about absentee registration online at multco.us/absentee. You can also contact our office at elections@multco.us or (503) 988-VOTE (8683) for further assistance.
