NEWS RELEASE: Celebrate National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 15 by Making a Plan to VOTE!

Multnomah County, Ore. (Sept. 9, 2026) — On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Multnomah County Elections and community members across the County, Oregon and the United States will celebrate National Voter Registration Day. This nationwide nonpartisan civic holiday is dedicated to ensuring every eligible voter has the opportunity to register to vote or update their registration, and access trusted information about the voting process.

In Oregon, National Voter Registration Day is also an opportunity to highlight our time-tested Vote by Mail process ahead of the Nov. 3, 2026, general election.

Voting by mail — with ballots mailed to voters, who can then send them back in the mail for free or drop them off at dozens of approved and secure County drop sites — remains a safe and reliable option.

The Nov. 3 election will include contests for federal and statewide offices — including for Congress, the Oregon Legislature and Governor. It will also include local contests for Multnomah County Chair, Commissioner, Auditor and Sheriff, and for City of Portland Councilor and Auditor.

For the first time, Multnomah County voters will use ranked choice voting to elect County candidates. The City of Portland began using ranked choice voting for candidate contests in November 2024.

The deadline to register for the Nov. 3 election is Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026. Multnomah County Elections will mail ballots to voters starting Oct. 14.

Make a plan to vote by:

Checking your voter registration status and making sure your information is up to date at oregonvotes.gov. Voters should update their voter registration any time they move, or change their residence or mailing address, name, and/or party affiliation.
Signing up for Track Your Ballot to receive alerts via text, phone, or email. This way you’ll know exactly when your ballot has been mailed to you. And then, after you return your ballot, you’ll also be notified when it’s been received and accepted for counting by your county elections office. Learning about Oregon’s reliable, accurate, convenient and secure Vote by Mail process. Plan for when you will receive your ballot, when and where you will vote, and how you will return your ballot. Voted ballots must be mailed with a valid postmark or returned to an Official Ballot Drop Site by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.
