OCCUPATION: Technology Sales Manager

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Technology sales management, manufacturing representative

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: PCC, Southern Oregon College, U of O BS Geography/urban studies emphasis

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Precinct committee person, Multnomah Education Service District Board Member

It has been my privilege to serve on the Multnomah Education Service District Board of Directors for the past six years. During this time I have been vigilant and determined to move the MESD ahead with appropriate and affordable technologies, identifying efficiencies that insure productivity and creating an environment which fosters new ideas. I have also been a strong advocate for creating a diverse workforce.

I am the father of two children, Melia 13, at Jackson Middle School, and Collin 18 at Wilson High School, and I myself attended Llewellyn Elementary School and Cleveland High School. I have been active in the community, concentrating on activities that support the family and neighborhoods. I have served on the Board of Directors of the Mt. Sylvania Little League, Southwest Neighborhoods Inc., (SWNI) and the Alternatives to Violence project for Portland. I am a past President of the Marshall Park Neighborhood Association.

Incumbent Ron Chinn is a hardworking, likeable, low profile guy quietly doing a bang up job on the board. He has shown a lot of initiative during his 1st term using his high tech background to improve computer use in the classroom and the administration. Willamette Week 2/17/99

Ron Chinn, a technology manufacturer representative is providing an essential 21st century education vision for the ESD. His expertise already has helped streamline the administration. The Oregonian 2/20/99

I am a lifelong resident of Portland and care about Oregon, our community and our kids. Please help me carry on this important work.

WILLIAM E. CONNOR

OCCUPATION: Physician/Professor, Oregon Health and Sciences University

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Iowa College of Medicine

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: M.D., University of Iowa, College of Medicine

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Incumbent, Multnomah Educational Service District; Chairman, Heart and Lung Program Project Committee, National Heart and Lung Institute; White House Conference on “Food, Nutrition and Health”

I am running for this position because of:

1. My concerns about the state of our schools. My interest in public education is intense. My five children and three grandchildren have all gone through public schools.

2. My experience as a career educator and a medical researcher. I have 28 years of experience in teaching at our own Oregon School of Medicine. I teach medical students, physician assistants, dietetic interns, and residents at OHSU hospital. Along with my wife Sonja a dietician, we have authored 5 diet books for the education of the public such as the New American Diet. I am also involved in nutrition research, supported by the National Institute of Health. Current projects are: effects of fish oil upon the heart, nutrition in diabetes, the Atkins diet and macular degeneration. Our research has involved children and families. We carried out the Family Heart Study in the Hollywood district.

3. My effectiveness and ability to solve problems in a group setting. I am willing to work hard in developing unique views and to cooperate with others to reach solutions to problems.

This election is important to me. We must join together to provide the best education possible for our children. What we do now for our children is the future of our society. We cannot let them down.
