Supplemental Life Insurance

All benefit-eligible employees are enrolled in County-paid Basic Life Insurance

If you would like additional coverage, you can apply anytime for Supplemental Life Insurance for up to $500,000 for yourself and up to $500,000 for your spouse/domestic partner. The Standard requires a medical questionnaire and applications will go through the underwriting process before being approved or denied.

However, if you apply following a qualifying life event*, you are guaranteed coverage for up to $200,000 for yourself and $50,000 for spouse/domestic partner. For more than this amount, underwriting is required.

How to apply

  • Apply using the Workday Benefits and Pay Hub. Change Benefits> Supplemental Life Enroll/Cancel > use today's date > then make your desired changes and submit! Submissions outside of a guarantee issue period will also require completion of a medical form, which will be emailed to you directly by The Standard.
    • Costs will be deducted post-tax from your paycheck on a semi-monthly basis.
    • You can apply any time, not just during open enrollment.
    • You can also cancel or lower your coverage at any time.
    • The minimum coverage amount starts at $30,000.

Continuing Your Life Insurance Post-Employment

This is referred to as "porting" your coverage. After your employment ends, The Standard will mail you a notice if applicable.
