PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Appointed to Gresham-Barlow School Board in September 2008
A few years ago with my children enrolled in the school district I decided it was time to learn more about public education, so I got involved. I was selected to represent my local elementary school on the District Advisory Committee, later I was appointed to the Budget Committee and finally I was appointed to the School Board in September of 2008. During this period I learned two important lessons; 1) Oregon's current funding structure for our children's schools is not effective and 2) All kids need to have the opportunity to LEARN.
First, the past few years has seen funding for our schools look like a giant roller coaster. A student going to school during a down economy will not get the same education as a child going to school in a good economy. We need to balance out our funding sources to allow a consistent level of funding and a consistent level of educational services.
Second, preparing our children for the world of tomorrow requires a commitment to allow ALL of our kids the opportunity to LEARN. The key word in the statement is ALL. A normal school curriculum will ensure 85% of the students are learning, leaving 15% of these students struggling or otherwise note engaged. Fortunately there many programs are in place to capture these students. It is critical that we continue to work to capture a great share of these students.
During my term as School Board member I will work closely with other board member to ensure these two important lessons are on the forefront of any decision. Educating our children is paramount in ensuring our children's future.
