Changing Your Name after Marriage/Domestic Partnership

Now that your name has changed after getting married , you’ll need to update your name on all of your identification, accounts, and important documents.

I’ve changed my name by marriage or State Domestic Partnership. What do I do now? Where do I go?

Once the marriage ceremony has taken place and the marriage license has been returned to our office, or once your State Domestic Partnership has been registered with our office, then your name has changed to the name that you declared on the document. Now that your name has changed, you’ll need to update your name on all of your identification, accounts, and important documents.
Examples of agencies to change your name with and documents to update are:

  • Social Security Card via the Social Security Administration
  • Driver’s License via the DMV
  • Military
  • Bank
  • Passport
  • Credit Cards
  • Insurance
  • Employer
  • Mortgage Company
  • Immigration
  • Landlord
  • Vehicle Registration via the DMV
  • Etc.

Most of these above require a certified copy of your marriage record or domestic partnership registration to update the information. Some agencies may keep a copy; others will hand it back to you.

You may purchase certified copies via our website, in our office, or you may order them by mail or via our drop box. Certified copies are $7.75 for the first one, and $4.00 each for any additional certified copies purchased at the same time.
