Project Description

Safer Sandy is a planning project to make NE Sandy Blvd safer for everyone to use. Sandy Blvd is an important road because it connects shops, homes, and job centers in Gresham, Fairview and Wood Village. Right now, the road is missing some important features such as sidewalks, bike lanes and accessible bus stops.

The goal of the project is to identify improvements for everyone who walks, rolls, bikes, takes transit, or drives on Sandy so they can share the road safely. This will be an opportunity to consider options such as adding crosswalks, improving street lighting, reducing truck conflict points, new sidewalks and bike lanes as well as other ideas.

This project is done in partnership with the City of Fairview and made possible with support from Metro.

Additional Design Updates

1. Parking on the north side of Sandy Blvd (between Blossom Hill Road and 223rd Avenue)

We heard concerns about removing on-street parking in this area. After reviewing the feedback and design constraints, the project team has not included parking in the proposed concept design (although they will continue to study its potential). Here’s why: 

• In the public survey, most people supported removing the parking.
• Keeping the parking lane and having consistent sidewalks and bike lanes along the corridor would mean removing either the center left-turn lane or trees along the north side of the road, which would conflict with other priorities we heard from the community.
• Multnomah County’s road standards don’t include parking on roads like Sandy Blvd.

2. Right-turn lane at Sandy Blvd and 223rd Ave

We also heard that a dedicated southbound right-turn lane is needed for people driving east on Sandy Blvd and turning south onto 223rd Ave. The project team is currently working on adding this to the proposed concept design.
