Business Analyst Series Positions in this series coordinate the installation, configuration, implementation, use, modification, troubleshooting, and integration of new and existing department specific non-enterprise Information Systems and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Perform, review, and evaluate business operations, workflows, and practices; identify and recommend improvements of information systems and other technologies; recommend system implementations and integrations; coordinate and conduct operational and process reviews, data repair, and business testing for information system features.
  • Consult with department staff regarding operational workflows, functions, and processes; identify and create customer requirements utilized by IT or software application vendors to help develop system specifications, design, interfaces, changes, and test plans for significant changes; act as a subject matter expert for IT regarding operational requests; ensure system design and integration requirements meet business needs.
  • Serve as liaison and provide assistance to IT staff, external agencies, managers, and vendors to coordinate the installation, configuration, implementation, use, modification, troubleshooting, and integration of major information systems for a department; coordinate, review, and perform acceptance tests of operational and systems solutions; determine impact on current processes and practices.
  • Revise procedures and provide end-user training on new system functionality, modules, and changes; design training assessment processes; provide end-user support for data collection, tracking, reporting, and compliance.
  • Develop business requirements for user reports in conjunction with department staff; design/develop user reports utilizing approved IT reporting tools based on requirements.
  • In addition to the above duties, the senior level will: provide project management; formulate scope, objectives, outcomes, and recommend solutions; build consensus with IT, management, end-users, and vendors to negotiate project priorities and outcomes; create operational procedures for systems end-users; provide advanced subject matter expertise to department and IT to ensure business requirements are translated into information system solutions; review and evaluate process changes, new application functionality, and system upgrades to determine impact on current business needs; identify operational issues and inform users of potential benefits and risks; recommend implementation changes in order to support business needs, protect against disruptions, and optimize existing processes; oversee data governance; write code using scripting and other IT-approved tools; escalate problems and issues to IT and vendors that cannot be handled internally to ensure timely resolution.

  • This series of classification differs from IT classifications in that it is for use in departments rather than Central IT. This series of classifications differs from the Data Analyst series in that the Data Analyst series is responsible for data gathering, analysis, and reporting within department specific databases developed and maintained internally, whereas the Business Analyst series is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and maintenance of department specific non-enterprise Information Systems and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.

Business Analyst Senior

  • Advanced level
  • Professional
  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.               
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.  
  • This series of classification differs from IT classifications in that it is for use in departments rather than Central IT. This series of classifications differs from the Data Analyst series in that the Data Analyst series is responsible for data gathering, analysis, and reporting within department specific databases developed and maintained internally, whereas the Business Analyst series is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and maintenance of department specific non-enterprise Information Systems and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Business Analyst

Training and experience for journey level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Business Analyst Senior

Training and experience for advanced level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 7-10 years of qualifying training and/or experience). 

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background exam check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
