Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of activities of an assigned shift; plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of a diverse workforce; conduct roll call and brief officers on new policies, procedures, and urgent issues; develop and revise work processes; establish work schedules; provide or coordinate staff training; manage performance and work with staff to correct deficiencies; monitor work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives.
  • Conduct general facility inspections and ensure that rules, regulations, policies, and procedures are being followed; maintain order, discipline, and security in accordance with laws, regulations, and citizen rights; review and evaluate incident and activity reports; report to the scene of serious incidents; protect and preserve crime scenes and evidence.
  • Contact inmates and assist in resolving issues related to their incarceration; arrange for and supervise the transportation of inmates to court, medical facilities, and other locations.
  • Identify and recommend changes to policies and procedures; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
  • Provide information and assistance to staff and the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Corrections Sergeant

  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.
  • Exercise direct supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 

Corrections Sergeant
Training and experience for this classification is a bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience as a Multnomah County Corrections Deputy within the last five (5) years.
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
