Deputy District Attorney Series
Positions in this series perform professional legal work on behalf of the State of Oregon which includes evaluating cases, negotiating pleas, trying cases, and presenting sentencing recommendations for crimes committed within Multnomah County.
Job description
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
- Litigate criminal cases; subpoena, schedule, interview, and prepare witnesses; examine prospective jurors to select an impartial jury; present evidence and argue objections and motions.
- Examine and analyze police reports and evidence; review legal issues and parameters; request further investigation as needed.
- Prepare formal charges; conduct court arraignment appearances; recommend bail amounts; negotiate case resolutions with defense counsel; prepare trial strategy to prosecute criminal cases; analyze admissibility and determine presentation of witnesses and evidence; litigate pre-trial motions; prepare legal briefs and oral arguments; conduct plea appearances.
- Formulate and recommend sentences based on criminal conviction; evaluate pre-sentence investigation reports; present evidence and witnesses to support sentencing recommendations; make pre-trial release recommendations.
- Provide support and assistance to victims; assist in obtaining counseling and other victim services; inform victims of case proceedings; release case information to the media.
- Analyze probation violation reports to determine whether to proceed with hearings.
- Provide legal advice to law enforcement agencies investigating crimes.
- In addition to the above duties, the Deputy District Attorney 1 will: evaluate and prosecute misdemeanor and traffic cases; perform special Oregon Administrative Rules case prosecution; perform post-conviction relief case research; prepare and present District Court motions.
- In addition to the above duties, the Deputy District Attorney 2 will: evaluate and prosecute felony cases; investigate non-payment of child support, negotiate settlements and payment arrangements, and enforce orders through persuasion, forced collections, contempt, and criminal actions; perform arson and hazardous waste prosecution; review returned search warrants and expungements.
- In addition to the above duties, the Deputy District Attorney 3 will: evaluate and prosecute complex, highly publicized, and sensitive felony cases for crimes against persons, such as homicide, sexual and/or physical abuse, assault, and rape; perform arson and hazardous waste prosecution; participate in homicide scene investigations and advise on seizure of evidence; assist investigators with search warrant affidavits; lead a small work unit or project team including prioritizing and coordinating work assignments, reviewing and evaluating projects, activities, and processes, and monitoring work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives; conduct special training for Deputy District Attorneys and law enforcement personnel; assist in the development, recommendation, and implementation of policies and procedures related to criminal prosecution.
- In addition to the above duties, the Deputy District Attorney 4 will: evaluate and prosecute complex, highly publicized, and sensitive cases involving intentional murder, criminal justice system employees, or public officials; direct, plan, and oversee criminal prosecution and administrative functions; plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of Deputy District Attorneys and major functional units of the District Attorney’s Office; develop and revise work processes; establish work schedules; provide or coordinate staff training; manage performance and work with staff to correct deficiencies; provide direction on difficult case matters; coordinate and schedule court docketing; assist in the development, recommendation, and implementation of policies, procedures, and practices related to criminal prosecution; participate in the development of budgets; participate in final plea negotiations for mandatory sentencing cases, murder cases, and capital murder cases; recommend granting immunity, reduced charges, or sentencing concessions; monitor and evaluate compliance of applicable requirements associated with processing cases.

Deputy District Attorney 2

- Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
- Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.

- Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
- Receive direction from a Deputy District Attorney 4.
Deputy District Attorney 3

- Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
- Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
- Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
- Receive direction from a Deputy District Attorney 4.
- In the absence of the Deputy District Attorney 4, the Deputy District Attorney 3 assumes full responsibility.
Deputy District Attorney 4
- Advanced level

- Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
- Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
- Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
- Receive direction from a Deputy District Attorney Chief or the District Attorney.
- Exercise direct supervision over staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check.
REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
- Must be a current member of the Oregon State Bar in good standing.
