Job description
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Investigate alleged crimes, accidents, and suspicious activities in businesses, residences, and areas of known criminal activity; interview victims, suspects, and witnesses; locate, identify, and preserve physical evidence; collect information on criminal activities; apprehend and arrest criminals on warrant or probable cause.
- Investigate and control complaints involving family disputes, inebriates, excessive noise, narcotics, runaways, mentally ill persons, and others; provide first aid for injuries, illnesses, drug overdoses, and attempted suicides; check on the well being of individuals.
- Answer and respond to 911 calls; observe traffic activities and conditions; operate breathalyzer and radar equipment; issue traffic warnings and citations to violators.
- Draft complex police reports, correspondence, staff reports, and related documents; maintain daily log of all activities; assist in preparation for court; testify in court.
- Provide information and assistance to staff and the public; investigate complaints and recommend resolutions as necessary; act as representative on committees, with local jurisdictions with intergovernmental agreements, interagency task forces, special projects, and other community outreach activities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
Deputy Sheriff
Training and experience for this journey level, professional classification is a minimum of two (2) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
Deputy Sheriff
- Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) certification required at the conclusion of the 12-18 month probationary period.
