This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile provide specialized forensic computer and digital device examinations and evaluations to discover and document evidence of illegal or prohibited activity.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Conduct forensic examinations of submitted evidence according to the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (RCFL).
  • Determine methods and techniques for extracting data from a variety of digital evidence; duplicate evidence for further investigations or tests.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance in field investigations to ensure data and equipment are preserved; support examination and investigation techniques for other law enforcement and legal entities.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on technical matters relating to digital evidence; testify in court or at hearings as an expert witness.
  • Document and record all procedures used in digital evidence examinations and recovery methods.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports with detailed examination results.
  • Conduct on-site examinations or data seizures when appropriate; maintain lab security.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Digital Forensics Examiner

Training and experience for journey level, technical classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
