This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile plan, organize, and supervise health sanitation inspection operations within the Environmental Health Section of the Health Department; coordinate interpretation of license code, investigate disease outbreaks, and provide programmatic information to the media and the public.

Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of activities of assigned area, program, and/or operation; plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of a diverse workforce; develop and revise work processes; establish work schedules; provide or coordinate staff training; manage performance and work with staff to correct deficiencies; monitor work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives.
  • Respond to requests for information regarding service delivery and control activities; provide community information and give presentations on health sanitation inspection issues in the areas of food service, tourist facilities, housing, water subsurface disposal, and vector and nuisance control.
  • Conduct special investigations in the areas of nuisance violations or food-borne disease; conduct sanitary inspections in cases of conflict between Environmental Health Specialists and facility operators.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; recommend and implement policies and procedures; assist in the development and administration of the budget; participate in forecasting additional funds for staffing and resources; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
  • Respond to and resolve confidential and sensitive inquiries; provide expert guidance to other departments, the general public and/or outside agencies; investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary; act as representative on committees, interagency task forces, special projects, and other community outreach activities as assigned.
  • Analyze and review federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; provide interpretation of federal, state, and local statutes and rules pertaining to food safety, safe drinking water, and accommodations; conduct analysis on best practices and trends, and formulate and implement recommendations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive administrative direction from management. 
  • Exercise direct supervision over staff.
  • This classification differs from other supervisory classifications due to assignments in a specialized field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 

Environmental Health Supervisor
Training and experience for advanced level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.  (Equivalency 7-10 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.

REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Must be registered as a Sanitarian in the State of Oregon.
  • Must meet standards of Environmental Health Specialist as outlined by ORS 700.030
