Fleet Maintenance Technician Series Positions in this series diagnose, repair, overhaul, and maintain fleet vehicles and other county equipment.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Perform preventive maintenance duties such as changing oil, replacing filters, checking fluid levels and lubricating moving parts.
  • Check and replace worn belts and hoses; repair cooling system and heater problems; check and measure brake lining thickness; clean and adjust brakes; check driveshaft joints and half shaft boots.
  • Inspect, repair and replace standard transmissions, clutches, differentials, transaxles, drive shafts, half shafts tires, mirrors, steering and suspension systems, accessories and safety equipment; replace standard or strut shock absorbers; inspect, test, and replace starters, exhaust systems, batteries, charging systems and shock absorbers.
  • Transport vehicles; inspect vehicles for alignment problems; pick up supplier parts; wash and clean vehicles.
  • In addition to the above duties, the Fleet Maintenance Technician 2 level will: diagnose, repair and maintain heavy vehicles and equipment such as loaders, cranes, crawlers, pavers, rollers, sweepers, and snow removal equipment; reline brakes, machine brake rotors, and drums; repair and adjust hydraulic and air brake systems; service wheel bearings; test and repair hydraulic and board diagnostic systems; repair or rewire lighting, instruments, and other electrical systems; repair windshield wiper systems and gasoline or diesel engines; adjust diesel fuel systems and governors; perform engine tune up work.
  • In addition to the above duties, the Fleet Maintenance Technician 3 level will; perform full diagnostics for fleet vehicles, heavy machinery, and other equipment to complete required repairs; determine and specify parts needed to complete complex repairs; weld and fabricate; troubleshoot and map out electrical components in specialized vehicles; rebuild or replace standard transmissions, clutches, differentials, transaxles, drive shafts and half shafts; may provide technical and functional supervision to staff; train and assign work to lower level technicians after diagnosing issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

LEVEL AND TYPE OF WORK AND/OR SUPERVISION:

Fleet Maintenance Technician 1

  • Entry level
  • Trades
  • Perform the more routine duties as assigned with increasing independence.
  • Decisions made or actions taken require higher-level review and work is checked for progress and reviewed for quality and compliance to policy and procedures.
  • Typically, incumbents may use the entry level to obtain the proficiencies to qualify at the next level in the classification series.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • Perform duties on vehicles and equipment under 26000 GVWR.

Fleet Maintenance Technician 2

  • Journey level
  • Trades
  • Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well-developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.

Fleet Maintenance Technician 3

  • Advanced level
  • Trades
  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive general supervision from manager.
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Fleet Maintenance Technician 1

Training and experience for entry level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and up to one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.  (Equivalency 0-1 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Fleet Maintenance Technician 2

Training and experience for journey level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.  (Equivalency 1-4 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Possession of a set of tools sufficient to perform duties.

Fleet Maintenance Technician 3

Training and experience for advanced level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.  (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Possession of a set of tools sufficient to perform duties.

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
