This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this profile provide guidance, security, training, and general care to vulnerable children and adolescent populations with mental and/or developmental issues within a detention setting or a Behavior Rehabilitation Services (BRS) program.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Provide behavior observation and assessment of individual detainees and groups; prepare reports, behavior summations, and verbal and written evaluations of children for unit logs, individual detainee files, and for the counselors and/or court.
  • Assist in admitting juveniles into the facility and with preliminary hearings; remove personal belongings, supervise, and control juveniles before screening; maintain proper security in the area.
  • Provide guidance and skill-building experiences to individuals and groups of detainees through group counseling, anger management, socialization skills, and employment skills; provide basic guidance and social counseling to clients as needed.
  • Screen for medical problems and arrange for medical attention; administer general first aid; issue medications as prescribed by staff nurse.
  • Make home visits to juveniles and their family to maintain close supervision contacts; transport clients to various locations, sometimes using restraints; provide security at hearings.
  • Assist in the reception of new juveniles, obtain routine personal history for records, and assign new residents to quarters; supervise and inform juveniles in housekeeping activities, house rules, and personal hygiene; deliver and assist in the preparation of meals to individual units.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 
Juvenile Custody Services Specialist
Training and experience for journey level, technical classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
