Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Provide customer service in person, over the phone, through social media, and other virtual media to answer questions, locate information, and train the public in using the Library's resources.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Research, analyze, develop, and initiate project ideas; prepare and present proposals; develop implementation and communication plans for projects, and lead implementation teams.
  • Prepare reports and develop recommendations for managers regarding specific areas of library services; participate in or lead work groups in quality and process improvements.

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT/CONTENT CREATION

  • Establish criteria for, maintain, and develop collections in any medium based on knowledge of community needs; select or supervise the selection, removal, and replacement of materials; develop guidelines and collaborate for system-wide collection development.
  • Catalog and classify library materials and electronic resources; create original bibliographic records; maintain the online catalog's authority file.
  • Create, compile and contribute to booklists, bibliographies, pathfinders, training guides, and Web resources using various formats, including digital.

STAFF TRAINING

  • Train, mentor and orient staff in current library skills, practices, and resources, including e-content.
  • Participate with or lead work groups or assigned committees.

PUBLIC PROGRAMMING AND OUTREACH

  • Plan, prepare and implement programs and/or outreach activities for a variety of communities and cultural groups of all ages.
  • Provide direction to staff and volunteers who plan and present programs.

PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT

  • Contribute to the library's community service and enrichment goals by promoting public awareness of library services and programs; focus on services to a specific age group, such as children and teens, or to special populations, such as the homebound or target language populations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with patrons, neighborhood organizations, and the greater population served by Multnomah County Library, in library and community settings.
  • Maintain business relationships with vendors, including budgeting, price negotiations, and signing authority for the purchase of materials and services.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Continually maintain/update professional skills and knowledge of reference, programming, collection, customer service and/or e-content knowledge through formal continuing education, professional development and study, and attendance at professional meetings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Librarian

  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.              
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Librarian

Training and experience for this advanced level, professional classification is an American Library Association accredited Master's degree in Library Science or its equivalent.

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
