This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile maintain a safe and secure environment for library patrons, staff, property, and premises.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Assist with opening and closing procedures and ensure all patrons leave at closing time; work with management and staff to implement loss prevention; retrieve, review, and analyze surveillance videos; coordinate lost and found activities.
  • Assist with library activities and programs, which may include: respond to requests for information; teach patrons how to use computers, copiers, checkout stations, payment machines, etc.; assist with preparing meeting rooms or other designated areas; empty book drops; receive, process, sort, and shelve materials.
  • Conduct routine inspections of the interior and exterior of library buildings; monitor buildings for unauthorized and suspicious activities; report security and hazardous conditions to Library management; monitor local law enforcement activity and communication using available resources.
  • Assist patrons in complying with the law and/or Library rules and policies; explain rules and policies to patrons; solicit patron cooperation and compliance; enforce correction of infractions through verbal warning; handle sensitive situations and detain more serious offenders for proper authorities; contact local law enforcement and/or emergency medical services as needed.
  • Prepare exclusion and incident/accident reports; provide advice to staff on how to complete reports; debrief staff on security incidents and issues; assist with providing training to staff regarding safety, security, and loss prevention.
  • Consult with and support coworkers, persons-in-charge, supervisors, or other staff with internal, workflow, patron, or other work issues in order to ensure effective library operations.
  • Assist with the development of security, operations, and emergency policies and procedures.
  • Perform urgent maintenance and housekeeping tasks for the safety of the staff and the public; respond to and remove sharps and substances/materials that might contain blood borne pathogens.
  • In conjunction with location management, serve as the point person in emergency or disaster situations; may act as a liaison concerning safety and security issues between library locations and neighboring businesses; may act as a liaison between the library and contract security personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Library Safety Liaison

Training and experience for this journey level, technical classification is typically equivalent to an associate's degree and up to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 2-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.

REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

  • First Aid, CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification is required within 3 months.
