Maintenance Specialist Series Positions in this series perform manual labor and tasks connected with road systems repair and maintenance.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Operate rubber tire loader (less than two yard cubic capacity) to move rock and other materials into dump trucks; operate tar pot, pug mill, and crack sealer; heat tar to proper temperature and apply to road surface with a spray wand.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as greasing, sandblasting, painting, and power washing; assist with forming and finishing; perform daily preventive maintenance checks and services of road or bridge maintenance vehicles and equipment; report defective equipment.
  • Operate hand and power tools such as grinders, air tools, wood saws, power hacksaws, and fabrication press; operate and maintain power broom and gang mower; operate tractor mounted roadside mower.
  • Utilize separate wheel tractors, light automotive trucks, and other light power equipment to sweep roadways, pick up refuse, load dirt, dig ditches, compact asphalt, and clean culverts and catch basins.
  • Maintain traffic control through the use of signs, cones, early warning devices, and other equipment; shovel asphalt, sand, and other materials used in the repair and maintenance of streets; cut, mow, trim, and spray weeds, shrubs, or lawns.
  • Perform building repairs including minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Perform layout work for striping and marking of roads; paint with brush, roller, or spray gun; prepare and Scotchlite sign blanks; print traffic control signs; operate concrete saw; wash and dry saw cuts for signal loops, install loop wires in saw cuts, and seal loops.
  • In addition to the above duties, the Maintenance Specialist 1 will: perform maintenance on bridge structures; operate trucks of various sizes in hauling and dumping materials; sand icy roads and plow snow; pave, seal, and clean roads; tow equipment; drive on county roadways and report conditions for dispatch; operate tar supply trailer; load and stockpile materials for sanding and sealing; operate truck mounted sweeping and catch basin cleaning equipment and bituminous asphalt distributors; operate machinery to open and close bridges in response to boat signals according to bridge safety procedures.
  • In addition to the above duties, the Maintenance Specialist 2 will: operate heavy equipment machinery such as graders for contouring roads, shoulders, and ditching, backhoes for digging ditches, road planers for patching and profiling, front end loaders for cleaning out ditches and restoring roadway operations, truck cranes with dragline, hook, clam bucket, pile driver, and wrecking ball attachments, heavy snow removal rotor attachments, self-propelled chip spreader and paving machine, lowboy truck for loading and hauling heavy equipment, and roller used in road oiling and sealing or concrete paving.
  • In addition to the above duties, the Maintenance Specialist Senior will: provide lead direction of work activities; prioritize and coordinate work assignments and projects; review work for accuracy and content; evaluate projects, activities, and processes; monitor work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives; plan and arrange projects within a specialty area; determine and develop bids for project equipment, supply, and labor needs; ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations such as traffic control signing and personal protective equipment; conduct inventory and order supplies; maintain equipment, material, payroll, cost, sign, and striping records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Maintenance Specialist Apprentice

  • Entry level

  • Perform the more routine duties as assigned with increasing independence.
  • Decisions made or actions taken require higher-level review and work is checked for progress and reviewed for quality and compliance to policy and procedures.
  • Typically, incumbents may use the entry level to obtain the proficiencies to qualify at the next level in the classification series.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • The Apprentice level performs functions in a support capacity where incumbents assist and learn through work assignments. 

Maintenance Specialist 1

  • Entry level
  • Trades
  • Perform the more routine duties as assigned with increasing independence.

Maintenance Specialist 2

  • Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well-developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

Maintenance Specialist Senior

  • Advanced level
  • Trades
  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive general supervision from manager.
  • Exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Maintenance Specialist Apprentice

Training and experience for entry level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and up to one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 0-1 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Maintenance Specialist 1

Training and experience for entry level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and up to one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 0-1 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Maintenance Specialist 2

Training and experience for journey level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 1-4 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Maintenance Specialist Senior

Training and experience for advanced level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.

REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

Maintenance Specialist Apprentice

  • Must obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit.

Maintenance Specialist 1

  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
