Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Operate rubber tire loader (less than two yard cubic capacity) to move rock and other materials into dump trucks; operate tar pot, pug mill, and crack sealer; heat tar to proper temperature and apply to road surface with a spray wand.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair rock crushing equipment used in producing rock for road maintenance; lubricate equipment; adjust belts and scrapers; repair and adjust a variety of parts, screws, plates, and bearings; operate hand and power tools such as grinders, air tools, wood saws, power hacksaws, and fabrication press; operate and maintain power broom and gang mower.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as greasing, sandblasting, painting, and power washing; assist with forming and finishing; perform daily preventive maintenance checks and services of road or bridge maintenance vehicles and equipment; report defective equipment.
  • Utilize separate wheel tractors, light automotive trucks, and other light power equipment to sweep roadways, pick up refuse, load dirt, dig ditches, compact asphalt, and clean culverts and catch basins.
  • Maintain traffic control through the use of signs, cones, early warning devices, and other equipment; shovel asphalt, sand, and other materials used in the repair and maintenance of streets; cut, mow, trim, and spray weeds, shrubs, or lawns.
  • Perform building repairs including minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Perform layout work for striping and marking of roads; paint with brush, roller, or spray gun; prepare and Scotchlite sign blanks; print traffic control signs; operate concrete saw; wash and dry saw cuts for signal loops, install loop wires in saw cuts, and seal loops.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Decisions made or actions taken require higher-level review and work is checked for progress and reviewed for quality and compliance to policy and procedures.
  • Typically, incumbents may use the entry level to obtain the proficiencies to qualify at the next level in the classification series.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Maintenance Worker

Training and experience for entry level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and up to one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 0-1 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
