This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile investigate reported violations of civil codes related to public health, sanitation, land use, and environmental sustainability and provide enforcement support.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Receive, prioritize, and investigate complaints about code violations; cite violations of various civil codes and assign correct penalty amount.
  • Resolve issues and educate violators about code; explain options for compliance, possibility of citation, and costs involved.
  • Provide enforcement support for environmental health professionals; call for assistance and support from sworn law enforcement officers when situation warrants; train on enforcement techniques.
  • Investigate possible code violations in remote locations, rough terrain, and unsanitary or hazardous conditions; remediate health hazards through contractors; order work stoppage.
  • Develop and maintain case files; gather and preserve evidence; represent county and present cases in hearings, district court, and administrative procedures.
  • Provide input in developing, revising, and maintaining operational policies, procedures, and codes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.

  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • May exercise technical and functional supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Nuisance Enforcement Officer

Training and experience for journey level, technical classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.

REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Ability to be commissioned as a non-sworn officer.
