Job description
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
- Provide paralegal assistance to assigned attorneys; perform research, discovery and case preparation; collect and compile various materials, documents and evidence; research facts and case law to prepare cases and determine proper course of action; confer with investigators regarding evidence; recommend court strategy; create a variety of forms, including briefs, petitions, statements, motions, complaints, affidavits, pleadings, and other legal documents; draft, review, and prepare correspondences, reports and presentations.
- Contact witnesses, attorneys and others associated with cases; arrange testimony and deposition of witnesses and medical conferences; interview witnesses and other participants in the legal process; review, summarize and prepare witness statements and deposition Testimonies.
- Coordinate preparation of county ordinances and resolutions and review with pertinent county staff; draft and prepare documents for the County Board of Commissioners; assist in developing, implementing and maintaining forms, processes, procedures and systems for orders, ordinances and resolutions prepared for the commissioners; oversee county code administration and publication ensuring compliance with county code, charter and administrative rules.
- Prepare and set up case requests and files; prepare trial notebooks, exhibits and lists; maintain master document index and set of case documents; assign document control numbers; develop privilege logs; analyze opposing counsel discovery requests and draft responses as needed; oversee preparing documents for opposing counsel; research and draft jury instructions; set up appeal files; track the course and deadlines of cases; assist at trials, hearings, depositions, pre-trial conferences and strategy meetings.
- Analyze and review federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; review and prepare analysis of employment claims; conduct legislative research and prepare written legal analysis; formulate and implement recommendations.
- Provide expert guidance to other departments, the general public, and/or outside agencies, outside counsel and defendants regarding legal procedures and processes; respond to inquiries and provide information regarding legal cases and other administrative matters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
Paralegal
Training and experience for journey level, paraprofessional classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
May exercise technical and functional supervision over staff.
