Class information

This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. This is a single incumbent job profile which is responsible for the reconciliation and remition of employment payroll taxes to various taxing authorities, and the maintenance of payroll functions on a county-wide basis.

Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Provide analysis and recommendations to management regarding policies, guidelines, and procedures; analyze and review federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conduct analysis on best practices and trends.
  • Reconcile and remit employment taxes to the appropriate taxing authority; consult on issues regarding payroll, wage information, and timekeeping practices; prepare reports for county, state and federal agencies.
  • Research and work directly with the IRS and state regarding penalty notices and filing discrepancies.
  • Reconcile, print, and distribute all employee W2's on an annual basis.
  • Research and correct system errors; recommend time module process improvements; resolve problems and provide education and customer service users.
  • Review wages computed and correct errors to ensure accuracy of payroll and compliance with wage and hour laws, collective bargaining agreements, and county personnel rules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 

Payroll Tax Specialist
Training and experience for journey level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
