Class information

This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile supervise the design and printing production of promotional and informational pieces, and perform graphic design work.

Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of activities of the graphic design and printing production operations; plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of a diverse workforce, including freelance artists and outside vendors; develop and revise work processes; establish work schedules; provide or coordinate staff training; manage performance and work with staff to correct deficiencies; monitor work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; recommend and implement policies and procedures; assist in the development and administration of the budget; participate in forecasting additional funds for staffing and resources; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
  • Meet with clients to assess and analyze needs; oversee and/or design concepts and layouts for print and electronic use; arrange for proofreading and/or editing of all pieces; manage, direct, and track production activities through the design, printing, and distribution phases; communicate project status to clients.
  • Create and maintain a plan for design standards; organize, schedule, and prioritize multiple jobs; maintain a record keeping system for accurate planning and estimating.
  • Respond to and resolve inquiries; provide expert guidance to other departments, the general public and/or outside agencies; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary; act as representative on committees, interagency task forces, special projects, and other community outreach activities as assigned.
  • Analyze and review policies and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conduct analysis on best practices and trends, and formulate and implement recommendations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from management. 
  • Exercise direct supervision over staff.                                              
  • This classification differs from other supervisory classifications due to assignments in a specialized field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 

Production Supervisor
Training and experience for advanced level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 7-10 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
