This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile provide professional medical veterinarian services, supervise animal health staff, and act as an expert resource within Multnomah County.

Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Plan, organize, manage, and administer veterinarian services; develop and implement program and strategic planning; implement and assist in the development of policies, procedures, and business practices; evaluate goals, objectives, priorities, and activities to improve performance and outcomes; recommend and establish administrative controls and improvements; develop procedures to implement new and/or changing regulatory requirements.
  • Perform surgical procedures and make referrals to specialists when needed to improve quality of life for animals; maintain control of restricted drugs.
  • Establish protocols for the care, prognosis and health of all animals brought into the Multnomah County Animal Shelter to check for disease, injuries or related conditions; promote the need for pet identification and responsible pet ownership within the community.
  • Manage the notification of animal bite victims of animals held at the shelter, supervise process to send suspected-rabies-animal samples to the State Laboratory for testing, and coordinate information flow between the County Health Department and the State Public Health Veterinarian.
  • Provide direction, guidance, and leadership to Animal Health personnel on proper treatment and care for animals in the shelter; advise on the more complex and sensitive concerns and issues.
  • Provide expert guidance to other departments, the general public, and/or outside agencies; represent the county to the public, elected officials, other agencies, governments, and organizations including making presentations, participating in meetings, and conducting community outreach; act as representative on committees, interagency task forces, special projects, and other community outreach activities; respond and resolve confidential and sensitive inquiries; investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
  • Analyze and review federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conduct analysis on best practices and trends, and formulate and implement recommendations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 

Veterinarian
Training and experience for this advanced level, professional classification includes graduation from a veterinary college or a veterinary department of a university or college of good standing and repute and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
 
License required to practice veterinary medicine as outlined by Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) 686.020.
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
