Multnomah County youth invited to participate in annual summit against violence

January 16, 2013

Registration is open for young people 21 and under to attend a summit to address violence against youth.

The Rob Ingram Youth Summit Against Violence hosted by the Multnomah Youth Commission will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 at the Ambridge Event Center, 1333 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Registration for youth and adult chaperones of participants is available online.

The summit was created in 2011 as a response to the growing violence directed toward young people. It is named for youth advocate Rob Ingram who passed away that year at age 38. Ingram was director of Portland’s Office of Youth Violence Prevention and volunteered with a number of local organizations, including as the president of the Urban League of Portland’s Young Professionals and the president of the Big Brothers Big Sisters African American Advisory board.

The Multnomah Youth Commission, the youth policy body for Multnomah County and the City of Portland, focuses on anti-gay and gender, cyberbullying, gang, school bullying, home, police and sexual and dating violence.

The goals of this year’s summit:

  • Provide resources for youth to deal with violence they experienced and/or experience in their lives.
  • Inform policymakers with the experiences youth face regarding violence and strengthen our youth-adult partnerships to implement our policy recommendations and actions.
  • Educate youth and adults about Our Bill of Rights: Children + Youth and the importance of its implementation into all decision making areas in the community.
  • Bring diverse youth from across the region together to share ideas and experiences regarding violence and build a youth movement for social change.
