Commissioner Smith on Martin Luther King, Jr. Remembrance Day

April 4, 2018

Commissioner Loretta Smith

On the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Commissioner Loretta Smith received word that Governor Kate Brown declared April 4, 2018 "Martin Luther King, Jr Remembrance Day."

The Commissioner had been in conversations with the Governor's staff about the best way to commemorate such a solemn occasion.

Commissioner Smith said, "His voice reached the masses. Regardless of race, color, religion or creed we are a better society with greater tolerance since Dr. King pointed us to a better way of communicating with one another, engaging our differences and embracing our diversity.

It is my hope, however, that we will redouble our efforts to reach even higher ground and achieve a greater American society like the one Dr. King dreamed of."

The Commissioner will read the proclamation at the April 5, 2018 Board of County Commissioners regular meeting.
