Helping families find a Home for the Holidays

In Multnomah County, our shelter system for families with children is bursting at the seams. More families are relying on shelter to keep them off the streets than ever before. And it’s taking longer than ever for families to get back on their feet and leave shelter, once they land there.

The fact is our region’s booming economy is leaving some people behind. Housing prices are high, and homes close to schools and jobs, and with enough bedrooms, are increasingly difficult to find.

That’s why we've worked with Portland and our providers to launch Home for the Holidays -- a push to help 40 families leave shelter for a permanent home by Jan. 15. And that’s why we’ve asked property managers and owners across the region to step up by offering available units to families and learning more about the support services that we offer to support and honor their partnership. In return, the county’s three family shelter providers, Human Solutions, Community of Hope and Portland Homeless Family Solutions will work with families and landlords to find a fit and offer support services to help families be successful.

Many families in shelter right now are working or have housing subsidies. They have the tools to be successful in a home of their own. If these families had an apartment ready for them today, they could leave shelter tomorrow.

Let’s make sure this holiday season is the last these families spend in a shelter!
