Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury's statement on shooting

April 9, 2018

Multnomah County works daily to help people find shelter and recovery services. So I was deeply saddened to learn of the shooting Saturday night at the Cityteam shelter. While the Portland Police Bureau investigates this tragic incident, I want to extend my sympathy to everyone involved, including the people who witnessed and experienced this traumatic event.

Toward that end, I asked our Multnomah County Mental Health and Addiction Services Division staff to work with partners to provide counseling and support. Specially trained members of the Traumatic Intervention Program of Portland/ Vancouver Inc. have responded to provide emotional support. I want to thank our essential partners at the non-profit Cityteam, Transition Projects and Imago Dei for moving quickly to continue to shelter and support visitors to the shelter.

The County’s Mental Health Call Center (503-988-4888) and Urgent Walk-In Clinic (4212 SE Division St.) are prepared to help people cope and work through difficult emotions. Both resources are available to all County residents who are in need of mental health support.
