News Advisory: County will "top off'' new Health Department Headquarters Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.

November 30, 2017

The new Multnomah County Gladys McCoy Health Department Headquarters rising in Old Town/Chinatown has reached a major milestone. The final piece of structural steel will be lifted into place and installed Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.

Neighbors are invited to join Chair Deborah Kafoury and the Multnomah County Commissioners, JE Dunn Construction, ZGF Architects, Prosper Portland and construction staff in the construction yard south of the building site to celebrate.

The County is replacing the 1923 McCoy building at 426 SW Stark with a new “modern, durable, flexible and efficient’’ nine-story building, said Project Manager Brett Taute. The Health Department is the largest safety net provider of primary and dental health care in Oregon. About 500 health professionals including the Tri-County Health officer, public health nurses, epidemiologists and administrators will report to work there.

The county's efforts to replace the current headquarters began in 2010. The county formally acquired the building site from the Portland Housing Bureau on Jan. 26, 2017 and on Feb. 17, 2017 began construction. Completion is scheduled for early 2019.

JE Dunn is the General Contractor/Construction Manager for the $94.1 million project. The building, on a half block west of Bud Clark Commons was designed by ZGF Architects. Shiels Obletz Johnsen is the owner's representative.

More than $36.4 million of the project is being funded by the Prosper Portland, formerly the Portland Development Commission. The public can view the construction 24/7 on our webcam.
