Job description
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Conduct pre and post-sentence investigations for court; interview offenders, employers, friends, families, victims, and others; analyze investigation information; prepare recommendations and testify for court and the Parole Board; write sanctions, warrants, transfer reports, intervention reports, and others.
- Advise and instruct offenders to comply with probation or parole conditions, legal obligations, and requirements imposed by the courts, Parole Board, and statute; recommend sentence modifications to the courts; draft and execute individual supervision or surveillance plans to monitor offender compliance; maintain records documenting compliance with probation or parole conditions.
- Identify and triage individual needs and risks of offenders; assess immediate abuse and functioning patterns; provide case management; make referrals for medical, psychological, and/or other community-based evaluations; develop and implement treatment plans; counsel offenders using cognitive-behavioral and evidence-based strategies in areas such as personal finances, employment, educational plans, substance abuse, and other social factors.
- Conduct unannounced visits to offenders’ residences or places of employment and perform field surveillance to determine levels of compliance; search and seize evidence as authorized; assess the level of danger presented by offenders; place offenders in secure custody when necessary; may arrest, detain, search, handcuff, and transport offenders.
- Act as representative on committees, interagency task forces, special projects, and other community outreach activities as assigned; develop partnerships and collaborate with community stakeholders, treatment agencies, and law enforcement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
Parole and Probation Officer
Training and experience for journey level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
- Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) certification required.
