The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners unanimously proclaimed September 2010 National Alcohol and Drug Recovery Month at their weekly meeting on Thursday, September 2.

In 2008, approximately 23.1 million people in the United States needed treatment for drug or alcohol addiction in the United States. This figure includes people of every age, race, ethnicity and socio-economic level.

Between 6,000 and 8,000 people in Multnomah County receive treatment for alcohol and drug addictions each year and over twice that number are in need of treatment, estimated Ray Hudson, manager of Addiction Services in Multnomah County.

At the meeting, Hudson introduced Collin Wright and Jimmy Williams, who told their recovery stories and spoke about the importance of safe housing for those in recovery. Both Wright and Williams achieved recovery with the support of roommates in sober living homes.

The board members thanked the presenters for sharing their compelling recovery stories. The commissioners noted that these stories were an inspiration to the community, especially for those struggling with addiction.

The board has found that listening to these stories and educating the community is essential in combating stereotypes and reducing the stigma associated with seeking treatment for addiction.

The meeting ended with an announcement from Patty Katz, co-founder of the Hands Across the Bridge, an event to celebrate recovery. Hands Across the Bridge will hold its ninth annual event on Monday, September 6 at 10 am. Members of the recovery community, as well as friends and family will join hands and span the I-5 bridge to kick off recovery month.
