Starting at 9 p.m. on May 23, a contractor will assess the condition of the driving surface on the Hawthorne Bridge. The contractor will be using a van with special equipment that collects bridge deck condition information. The van will be driving at approximately 5 miles per hour and a car will be driving behind it to caution drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. The machine has to cover the entire surface of the bridge from curb to curb, including the bike lane, to collect data. That means some of the bike lane markers will be temporarily removed on the east side of the bridge. The bridge assessment will run through 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. Multnomah County maintains the Hawthorne bridge as well as five other Willamette River bridges. For information visit: /bridges
