This project replaced the control system that helps operate the Broadway Bridge drawbridge. Two weekend bridge closures were required in August and September 2021.

In November 2022, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners accepted a recommendation to rename the Sauvie Island Bridge.
In 2009, the county adopted a $19 per year vehicle registration fee to fund the new Sellwood Bridge. In 2018, the state allowed the county to use VRF revenue on other Willamette River bridge projects.
