Project Information
- Location: Broadway Bridge
- Schedule: August to September 2021
- Funding Source: 100% county-funded
Project Description
This project replaced the control system that helps operate the Broadway Bridge drawbridge. This includes the computer that allows us to send instructions, the drives that use those instructions to move the drawbridge, and touch screens and other controls.
This also includes the computer that controls some overhead equipment for the Portland Streetcar.
The new system will be more reliable. It will be easier to use and maintain. It will also provide more data to monitor the health of the bridge and give feedback to bridge operators.
Schedule
There were two full bridge closures:
-
Saturday-Monday, August 21-23
-
Saturday-Monday, September 18-20
Additional work in August and September had minimal effects on bridge users.
Traffic Impacts
During the closures, the bridge was fully closed to all road, pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and the streetcar did not cross the bridge. These closures were from 6am to 6pm each day.
There were additional minor delays at other times during the project, similar to a normal bridge lift lasting about 20 minutes. The work required outside lanes to be closed some weekdays between 8 am and 3:30 pm. The center lanes were always open, except during the full bridge closures on weekends.
At least one leaf of the drawbridge was able to open at any time to allow vessels to pass. Single leaf openings of the drawbridge happened from August 2 through September 26, 2021. River traffic could request a tugboat assist if needed by contacting the Hawthorne Bridge operator.
The Portland Streetcar announced service changes during the closure.
